Easy Homemade White Sandwich Bread

There’s something deeply comforting about baking your own bread. The slow rise, the feel of the dough beneath your hands, and the smell filling the kitchen all have a way of grounding you in the moment. Bread baking invites you to slow down, even on days when everything else feels rushed. I was terrified to try baking my first loaf without a bread machine, but it was so worth it.

This homemade white sandwich bread is one of those simple, dependable recipes that fits easily into everyday life. It’s soft, light, and perfect for sandwiches, toast, or just a warm slice with butter. No fancy ingredients or complicated techniques, just a classic loaf that’s meant to be made and enjoyed often.

I love this recipe because it’s forgiving and approachable, even if you’re newer to baking bread. It’s the kind of loaf you can make on a quiet afternoon or work into your weekly routine once you find your rhythm. And like most homemade bread, it teaches you a little something each time you make it.

If you’ve ever wanted to try baking your own sandwich bread but felt unsure where to start, this is a wonderful place to begin. It’s cozy, practical, and deeply satisfying. The kind of recipe that turns an ordinary day into something a little warmer. I’ve honestly never been more proud of anything I’ve ever baked before. While this bread does require a little patience for proofing, it’s an easy, flexible process. You can go about your day and come back to it when needed, which makes baking this loaf feel comforting rather than overwhelming.

Recipe

Ingredient Amount
Water1 1/2 cups @ 105-110°F
Active Dry Yeast2 1/4 teaspoons
Honey1 tablespoon
Olive Oil2 tablespoons
Salt1 1/2 teaspoons
Unbleached all purpose flour or bread flour3-3 1/2 cups

Directions

  1. Add heated water to mixing bowl, add yeast and honey. Stir well and cover for 5-10 minutes. Should look foamy when Yeast is activated.
  2. Add olive oil and salt.
  3. Add 3 cups flour, mix well. Reserve the rest for kneading.
  4. Turn onto floured surface and knead 8-10 minutes. Only use enough flour to keep the dough manageable.
  5. Wash mixing bowl and grease with oil so that it is coated.
  6. Cover and allow to rise for 1-2 hours.
  7. Once doubled punch the dough down, and turn it onto a floured surface.
  8. Knead for a few times to make sure dough is properly deflated.
  9. Shape the dough into a loaf shape. Grease pan and add dough. Cover and allow to rise for 30 minutes to an hour.
  10. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  11. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. Internal temperature should read 205-210°F.
  12. Allow to cool before slicing.

Tips:
  • Do not overknead, it will make the bread dense and not rise properly.
  • Make sure the yeast mixture is foaming, if it's not activated you'll get a dense loaf.
  • You can switch the Olive Oil with Vegetable Oil but it may affect taste and overall dryness of the loaf.
  • Use a stand mixer if you don't want to hand knead (for the first kneading step).

From My Kitchen to Yours

The first time you make this bread, it might not look like the perfectly styled loaves you see in photos, and that’s completely okay. Bread doesn’t need to be pretty or flawless; it needs to be delicious and enjoyed. You can see from my picture at the top that my loaf wasn’t perfect, and yet I savored every single slice in just a couple of days.

Yours, and mine, doesn’t have to look like bakery bread. Instead, we can take comfort in knowing it’s made with care and simple ingredients, made in a real kitchen, and meant to be enjoyed. That’s what makes homemade bread so special.

If you give this recipe a try, take your time and enjoy the process. There’s something special about slicing into a homemade loaf and knowing you made it yourself. And if you ever need a reason to slow down, let bread be it.
